Mercurii et Veneris fil. ut ex ipsa statim vocis compositione apparet. Nam Mercurius Ε῾ρμῆς, Venus Α᾿φροδίτη Graecis dicitur. Hic cum vagabundus in Caria ad limpidissimum fontem, quem Salmacis nymphaincolebar, pervenisset, illa subito eius amore correpta (erat enim adolescens formosissimus) cum neque blanditiis neque precibus adconcubitum flectere eum posset, simulato recessu post verpres latuit. Is autem nympham abiisse ratus, fontem nudus intravit: quod videns Salmachis subito accorrit, et abiectis vestibus arctissime eum complexaest. Sed cum ne sic quidem obstinatum iuvenis animum exorar posset, a diis petiit, ut ex duobus corporibus in unum redigerentur. Quibus precibus a superis exauditis, ambo in unum corpus coaluêrunt, ita tamen, ut sexus uterque integer remanerer; Quod cum vidislet Hermaplnoditus, a superis petiisse dicitur, ut ea fonti natura manerer, ut qui vir eum intratet, ἀνδρόγυνος, i. e. utrumqueve sexum habens, exitet. Ovid. Mit. l. 4. v. 347. et 383. Fingitur autem Hermaphroditus Mercurii et Veneris fil. eo quod stella Mercuii, ob qualitates, quibus praeest, mediae naturae putatur. Nam cum aliae stellae ab Astrologis dicantur masculinae, propter maius robur, quo colorem excitant: aliae vero, propter debiliores vites, et naturam humidi, cui dominantur, femininae, Mercurii stella nunc humidum, nunc calidum abunde excitat, pro situ et motusuo. Porro Salmacidis nymphae fabula, non tam ad vitium aquaq, quam ad inertiam, et otium, quo vites horninzm enervantur, referenda est. Erant enim Cates, qui eo loco habitabant, homines desidiae, et luxuriae pleni, ae foedis deditilibidinibus, unde et Hermaphroditi vuigo appellabantur, nam sic etiam dicuntur, qui molle ssunt, et utramque Venerem exercent. In eam fere sententiam et Strab. exponir hanc fabulam l. 14. p. 656. cui consentit Ovid. Salmacidem nympham otio et libidini deitam, describens. Ceterum de Hermaphrodito lubet elegantissimos antiqui poetae versiculos hîc apponere,
Quum maea me genetrix gravida gestaret in alvo,
Quid pareret, fertur consulisse Deos.
Mas est, Phoebus ait, Mars femina, Iunoque neutrum,
Quumque forem natus, Hermaphroditus eram.
Quaerenti Letum, Dea sic ait, Occidet armis,
